Dead Drop: A Birthday Intercept

A dimly lit safe house. FLISS DARLING stands over a surveillance table. LEO FINCH examines something through a loupe. JACK AVERY is slumped in a chair looking emotionally destroyed, which is his default setting. On the edge of the table, inexplicably, sit two small plastic toy dinosaurs.

FLISS: The intercept came through at 0300. Someone's planning a surprise. LEO: (not looking up) For who? FLISS: Two men. Born the same year. Same March. Eleven days apart. JACK: That tracks. The universe has a type.

LEO: (holding up a photo) Alan Tudyk. Voice actor. Chaotic neutral. Dangerous in a room with a prop department. FLISS: And Fillion. Nathan. Former space cowboy. Present-day man of devastating cheekbones. Also dangerous. JACK: (quietly, to no one) It's time. (beat) Sorry. Don't know why I said that.

FLISS: The Once Were Spacemen community is mobilizing. Birthday wishes. Creative tributes. Mystery gifts from something called... (checks file) ...the crap closet. LEO: I respect that completely.

FLISS: The mission, if we choose to accept it— JACK: We always accept it. FLISS: —is to deliver something legendary. Funny. Heartfelt. The kind of thing that makes two grown men feel genuinely, embarrassingly loved by a community that has absolutely no intention of being normal about it.

LEO: (standing, gesturing dramatically) Then here is what we know. Nathan Fillion has spent decades making people feel like the universe is survivable. Funny. Occasionally dangerous. But survivable. JACK: And Alan Tudyk has spent the same decades proving that the strangest, most uncontainable person in any room is usually the one keeping everyone else from falling apart.

FLISS: (raising her glass) So. Happy birthday, Spacemen. (pause. directly to camera.) You built something real. The community, the chaos, the crap closet — all of it. You don't even know how many people you've held together just by being exactly, catastrophically yourselves. (beat)

LEO: That was surprisingly sincere. FLISS: I have layers. JACK: She really doesn't.

FLISS: This message will self-destruct. LEO: Will it? FLISS: No. We're out of budget for that.

[Reach off frame. Place Wash and Reynolds Funko Pops down in front of camera. Stare at them.]

FLISS: We all know who the real pilot is.

[Hold. Deadpan. Cut.]
