A Crew Is Not a Cast

Field Note: The ship was the point.

A cast stands near each other.

A crew has jobs, grudges, rituals, a shared escape route, and at least one person everyone pretends is not the problem.

There is a difference.

A cast performs. A crew holds. A cast takes their bow. A crew checks the rigging, argues about who forgot to lock the van, and keeps the whole thing from collapsing in the third act when the lead loses the prop they swore they had.

The person keeping the peace is usually the one nobody cast in anything. They just showed up. They learned everyone's coffee order. They remembered the thing you said in passing six months ago and built something around it.

That is the person you keep.

Not because they're useful — though they are — but because a crew that works is not assembled. It accretes. Slowly. Around people who decide to stay.
